The Brittany dog breed originated in France in the mid-1800s. They were a popular choice for French sportsman as well as poachers because of their excellent pointing and retrieving skills as well as their propensity for being extremely obedient. Interestingly, when the breed came to America in 1925 it was not immediately accepted by hunters as a viable choice for a hunting dog. But once American hunters realized their potential, they embraced them and today they are the most popular hunting breed.

These dogs possess the same characteristics today as they did when they were created back in the 1800s. They are excellent pointers and retrievers, and are incredibly responsive to direction. They are eager to please and therefore easy to train. They are very quick as well.

Because they are hunters by nature, they are an active breed, which means they require a lot of good exercise daily to remain happy.

If they do not get at least an hour of exertion a day, they may become destructive to the home, chewing on furniture or emptying closets and drawers.

Other things to consider are grooming requirements and probably health concerns. For grooming, their coats need to be brushed at least once or twice a week. While their coats are not very long, the wavy hair can become matted. As far as health concerns, this breed is known for developing hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Hip dysplasia is a condition of the ball-and-socket hip joint where the ball does not properly fit into the socket. This causes painful limping and lameness. Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that can cause mental problems and can cause distress and physical pain. Usually long-term medication is prescribed for epilepsy.

Many pet owners opt to invest in pet insurance to help alleviate the costs associated with treating health conditions in the breed.

Pet insurance companies will reimburse pet owners a portion of the veterinary bill so the pet owner can make decisions based solely on what is best for the animal.

Brittanys are a medium-sized breed, standing between 17.5 and 20.5 inches and weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. They usually live between twelve an thirteen years.

Question by : Why are homes in Brittany France so cheap? Looking at real estate in Brittany France and am amazed by how inexpensive homes out there are. Any information on why they're so cheap is appreciated. Best answer for Why are homes in Brittany France so cheap?:

Answer by Nutty Chocolatier
It's mostly rural. Towns/villages and some smallish cities, with lots of farmland in between. Rural land is cheap in North America too.
